M.Nadine SAYIBA Mbila | From Survival To Governance

Nadine Sayiba Mbila, lawyer at the North Kivu Bar, gender expert, and founder of law firm CNSA, is photographed in Goma, North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, on February 25, 2026. One of the most prominent women in law in eastern DRC, Sayiba Mbila has built her career at the intersection of justice, gender, and humanitarian advocacy defending victims of sexual and gender-based violence, advising institutions on transitional justice, and coordinating women lawyers across North Kivu at a time when the ongoing armed conflict continues to expose civilians, and women in particular, to systematic rights violations. The United Nations has repeatedly identified eastern DRC as one of the most dangerous places in the world for women, making the work of legal defenders like Sayiba Mbila both urgent and indispensable. ©Isaac Bujirwa | Sote Pamoja DRC & FCRJ London

Building the Case for Justice | From Survival To Governance

Nadine Sayiba Mbila, founder of law firm CNSA and coordinator of women lawyers in North Kivu, addresses colleagues during a working session in Goma, North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, on April 17, 2026. The gathering brought together leading institutions and feminists NGOs from the region working on human rights, gender, and peacebuilding a space where Sayiba Mbila's dual expertise as a legal practitioner and gender specialist positions her as a critical bridge between grassroots realities and institutional advocacy. As peace negotiations for eastern DRC continue at the international level, civil society actors like Sayiba Mbila argue that no lasting peace is possible without accountability mechanisms and the systematic inclusion of women in justice processes. ©Isaac Bujirwa | Sote Pamoja DRC & FCRJ London

Rosette Nkundimfura | From Survival To Governance

Rosette Nkundimfura is the Founder and Executive Director of the Girls Leaders Forum (GLF), anorganization she established in 2012 while serving as a student leader at university. GLF operates across more than 20 universities and 10 high schools in Rwanda, focusing on empowering girls through leadership, sexual and reproductive health education, economic empowerment, and values-based development. Through GLF, Rosette has contributed to the transformation of many young women’s lives. One notable example is a young woman she mentored who initially lacked confidence and did not believe she couldtake on leadership roles. With guidance and encouragement, the young woman became a class representative, later rose to vice president of the student union, and eventually built a successful career asa journalist. GLF addresses key challenges faced by girls and young women, including low self -esteem, lack of mentorship, economic dependence, and exposure to sexual exploitation and corruption. The organization equips girls with leadership skills, confidence, and practical knowledge to navigate these challenges. Its core approach emphasizes raising girls who are “smart, strong, and spirited”, ensuring they areacademically capable, resilient, and able to advocate for themselves and others.

KAMUSONI Ingrid | From Survival To Governance photo

KAMUSONI Ingrid | From Survival To Governance

"In Burundi, the law exists. But for women and girls especially the youngest ones the law has rarely spoken loudly enough. Kamusoni Ingrid decided to make it speak." Ingrid has spent over twelve years as Executive Secretary of the AFB the Association for the Promotion of the Burundian Girl an organization dedicated to gender equality, women's empowerment, and the protection of adolescent girls' rights. A jurist by training, she brought to her activism something rare : the ability to translate legal frameworks into lived realities for the most vulnerable. Under her leadership, the flagship project Abakaburiraterambere Women as Catalysts for Sustainable Development reached more than 2,300 women and girls. One hundred and thirty-five income generating initiatives were supported. Community early-warning networks were built from the ground up designed to prevent, detect, and report violence against women before it became irreversible. Between 2022 and 2025, through the RHRN2 programme, Ingrid led comprehensive sexuality education for over 2,800 adolescents and young people. One hundred and two school clubs of young leaders were created safe spaces where girls learn that their bodies, their voices, and their futures belong to them. Awareness campaigns reached parents, educators, and community leaders, shifting the conversation around early pregnancy from shame to structural responsibility. "When a girl drops out of school because she is pregnant, that is not a personal failure. That is a systemic failure. My work is to change the system one community, one club, one girl at a time." Through every programme she has designed, every network she has built, every girl she has equipped with knowledge and confidence, Kamusoni Ingrid has done more than defend rights. She has built the structures that make rights real and in doing so, she has become one of Burundi's most important voices for equality, dignity, and lasting social change.

THE ILLUSION dessin

THE ILLUSION

We live in a world where everything we see and experience is controlled by others, with all the chaotic images of the world life presents to our perception. Do we live with true images of the world? Or is this self of mine caught in a total illusion of real life? In a world shaped by lies, crimes, systems, and laws created by others who are supposed to be better.
