What the Skin Knows
Scarification, a mark, a language the skin speaks when words fail. In many cultures across the African continent, marking the body inscribes the individual within a continuum; it tells them: you come from something, you are going towards something, and in between, you are not alone. And yet, alongside this face laden with history, the golden comb evokes care, daily ritual, and the transmission of knowledge between women.

There is wisdom in what is not fully revealed. This face that emerges from the darkness and selectively allows glimpses of the incomplete. In African traditions, night has never been synonymous with absence. It is the time of spirits, of decisions that ripen, of truths that can only be seen by closing one's eyes. Today, the digital world also produces a kind of night: a saturation of data so dense that we can no longer distinguish the essential from the noise. The Black woman, however, knows. Her asymmetrical, semi-open gaze stems from this philosophy. She chooses what she looks at. She filters. In this world that is racing ahead, she is what the ancients called the guardian of the threshold: the one who decides what enters and what remains outside. Neither in the past, nor swallowed by the future. On the edge. And that's where everything hinges.

AUGMENTED CROWN: tech as adornment, not as a prosthesis
Regardez les circuits sur sa tête qui épousent la forme de son crâne comme une couronne tressée, comme un gele noué avec précision un matin de cérémonie. La technologie, quand elle est juste, ne devrait pas défigurer. Elle devrait orner. Amplifier ce qui est déjà là. Cette femme incarne une vision du futur que l'Afrique porte depuis longtemps sans qu'on lui en donne le crédit : l'idée que l'innovation ne naît pas dans l'oubli de soi, mais dans la profondeur de sa propre racine. Les grandes mathématiciennes, les tisserandes dont les motifs géométriques préfiguraient les fractales, les guérisseuses qui codifiaient le vivant bien avant les laboratoires; elles étaient déjà là. Cette œuvre ne dit pas que la femme doit s'adapter à la technologie mais que la technologie devrait avoir l'intelligence de s'adapter à elle. De reconnaître en elle non pas une utilisatrice, mais une architecte qui, depuis toujours, maintient l'équilibre entre ce qui se construit et ce qui doit être préservé. Entre la vitesse du monde et la lenteur nécessaire de l'âme.

Nelly MBANGU | From Survival To Governance
Nelly Godelive Mbangu is a lawyer at the North Kivu Bar in Goma and a gender expert and conflict mediator in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. A committed human rights defender, she focuses on advancing the rights of women and girls. She coordinates the women’s platform Sauti ya Mama Mukongomani, a network of 56 national organizations promoting peace, social cohesion, and women’s rights, and is co-founder and president of the Dynamique des Femmes Juristes. Her work supports mediation, access to justice, prevention of gender-based violence, and women’s leadership. Recognized for her impact, she is an ambassador of the Mama Muilu Prize and a laureate of the 2025 Franco-German Prize for Human Rights
