KAMUSONI Ingrid | From Survival To Governance
Presented by
SOTE PAMOJA DRC | FCRJ - SOAS University of London
"In Burundi, the law exists. But for women and girls especially the youngest ones the law has rarely spoken loudly enough. Kamusoni Ingrid decided to make it speak."
Ingrid has spent over twelve years as Executive Secretary of the AFB the Association for the Promotion of the Burundian Girl an organization dedicated to gender equality, women's empowerment, and the protection of adolescent girls' rights.
A jurist by training, she brought to her activism something rare : the ability to translate legal frameworks into lived realities for the most vulnerable.
Under her leadership, the flagship project Abakaburiraterambere Women as Catalysts for Sustainable Development reached more than 2,300 women and girls. One hundred and thirty-five income generating initiatives were supported.
Community early-warning networks were built from the ground up designed to prevent, detect, and report violence against women before it became irreversible.
Between 2022 and 2025, through the RHRN2 programme, Ingrid led comprehensive sexuality education for over 2,800 adolescents and young people. One hundred and two school clubs of young leaders were created safe spaces where girls learn that their bodies, their voices, and their futures belong to them. Awareness campaigns reached parents, educators, and community leaders, shifting the conversation around early pregnancy from shame to structural responsibility. "When a girl drops out of school because she is pregnant, that is not a personal failure. That is a systemic failure.
My work is to change the system one community, one club, one girl at a time." Through every programme she has designed, every network she has built, every girl she has equipped with knowledge and confidence, Kamusoni Ingrid has done more than defend rights.
She has built the structures that make rights real and in doing so, she has become one of Burundi's most important voices for equality, dignity, and lasting social change.
